10 Myths About Depression

1. Depression is a choice:

Tons of people in the world think that depression is only a choice. They presume that depression is not a real illness and people pretend to be depressed sometimes because they want to gain sympathy from other people. I know it hurts to listen all these but these myths have been practiced by people for over a decade!

People think that it's all in someone's head. They want to feel depressed that's why they used to have bad feelings. However, it's never the truth. Depression is a scientifically proved mental illness. According to PSYCHIATRY, Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.

So, no doubt that depression is a real illness and no one in the world ever wants to have depression since it's so painful!

2. Only the women are affected by depression:

Tons of people think that women are the only one who can get affected by depression. Because, the women have to take loads of responsibilities in a family including caring about their children, home and other things. Moreover, they used to be quite a lot emotional and sensitive than the men.

Even though, a recent study has found, Women are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression. However, presuming that only the women are affected by depression can be an injustice for the men out there. They also have pain and stresses. Estimated 5.3% men in the world are affected by depression. Whereas, the estimate for the women is 8.7%. Women are mostly affected by depression because they used to have several mood changes and they also experience hormonal fluctuations regularly. However, if you think that only women are affected by depression, then you're completely wrong.

3. Depression will go away automatically by time:

Many people who suffer from depression, only depend on time without taking any specific actions or consulting a doctor. Eve sometimes many people around them also think in that way. So, they most never take it seriously. Even though it's true that "time will heal all the pains".

However depression is more than a simple pain. It's a serious mental disease that can go terrible wrong if the necessary actions are not taken in time. When, you're being in the early stage of depression, you may cure it by taking some disciplined steps or talking about this to your close people and taking some simple counsellings. However, if you think that it's going out of hand, then you must consult with a doctor or with a professional therapist.

4. Depression is similar to sadness:

Masses of people compare depression to sadness often. However there is a huge difference between the two. Sadness may be caused for some specific reasons and the reasons are mostly explainable. On the other hand, the reasons of depression used to be entirely inexplicable.

Even those people who get depression for the first used to suffer the most, since when they used to feel down and then when they become asked about this, they actually can't illustrate anything and eventually for the most part, they used to be misunderstood by others. Moreover, sadness may stay for a shortage of time and maximum for 1-2 weeks and then it goes away automatically. But, depression  is a long term disease. It will stay until finally you take necessary actions and let it to go away. So, depression and sadness are always different.

5. Only the adults can get depressed:

If you think that adults are the only one who can get depressed, then you're utterly wrong! Although it's true that people from the age of 18-29 suffer the most from depression, however the children and teenagers can get depressed too. Even, nowadays the estimate is being on a rise. A recent study has found, perhaps 20%  of the teenagers in the world experience depression before they reach adulthood. Besides, 11-15% teenagers may experience different symptoms of depression at a time.

In this generation, the teenagers have to go through different circumstances that may make them literally depressed. Many children and teenagers nowadays used to be bullied in their schools and in others places. Some of them even used to be sexually abused. Furthermore, many teenagers used to get depressed for having a fighting parents. It's always necessary to listen to you kids and teenagers. Otherwise, then may even think of committing suicide and ending their life.

Even though, it's true that traumatizing events used to caused most of the depressions. However, sometimes it may also occur for several other reasons. Depression can be a result of extreme anxiety and overthinking.

Furthermore, some people even may experience depression for genetic reasons. For instance, if any of parents or other close relatives had suffered from depression, then you may experience some symptoms of depression too.

7. Anyone can get depressed suddenly and even for small events:

In the internet based era, you will find heaps of people giving different status and writing about their misery on the social media platforms like facebook, twitter regularly. Their writings may look so pathetic. But, in reality, most of them just fake their all these things. I am not saying that you cannot talk about your misery on your social media handles. However, talking about this regularly actually looks suspicious.

It sounds like, they are pretending to be depressed by every little bad incidents. Is it so easy to get depressed? No way!! I know no one ever desires to get depressed. But, reckon me, you won't be able to get depressed even if you will wish to be. It takes a lot to be depressed. So, if someone is saying you that they have gotten depressed for any silly events, never trust them.

8. Talking about depression makes it worse:

Tons of people never speaks up about their feeling. Because they think that it talking about this will make it worse. Some people even used to be afraid of talking about depression, because they feel that people may laugh at their feelings. Even though, it's true that you will get not effect if you will talk about this to the wrong people. Since, they will never understand you.

However, you will be always surrounded by some people who will support you and will inspire you. Even if you will be super unlucky, there will be at least one person who will inspire you every moment. Talking about your sufferings to them will always make it lighter. 9. You'll need to take treatments to the rest of your life:

Till that moment, we only talked about those people who take depression not so seriously. However, what's about those people who take it so seriously? Well, tons of people take depression so solemnly and used to so intimidated by this.

They think and even sometimes they used to be taught that if they suffer from depression once, then they will have to take treatment to the rest of their life. Taking some necessary steps and consulting with a good doctor or therapist are enough for curing depression. Personally I will recommend everyone and even a mentally healthy person doing meditation and taking some counsellings once in a month or once in a week since it helps to improve both moods and mental health. Even, the fact is I do all of these too.

10. Depression is a sign of weakness:

Many people presume that only those people who are mentally weak can get depressed but it's never true. According to Nationwide Children, Depression is not a sign of weakness. Depression is a real and serious condition. It is not much different than a chronic health condition in its ability to impact someone's life.

It can have both emotional and physical symptoms and make life very difficult for those who have it. From my perspective, people who suffer from depression are literally strong. Because they have to go thorough different hopelessness and disappointment. They have to survive all the for living the life. No doubt that those people who can survive all these must be mentally strong enough!
