Sadness VS. Depression
1. Sadness is not an illness but depression is:
Some people say that depression is not a real illness. You may also find a group of people pretending that sadness is like a mental pain. But, both of these situations are unreal.
Sadness is a common emotional feeling like happiness or anger. Talking about depression, it's a real mental pain. It has several other names like mood disorder. There is also a name called Persistent depressive disorder, also called dysthymia which is a continuous long-term (chronic) form of depression.
2. Sadness may go away within days but depression can stay longer:
It doesn't matter how sad you are and how big the reason is. But if it's only sadness then it won't take more than some days or some weeks to feel better. You may not notice any change within a day, but everyday you will feel a little better. And most likely you won't have to make an effort for this
On the other hand, depression is a long term mental pain. If you will ask how much time depression may stay? Then the answer is, it may last for as long as 2 years at a row. Persistent depressive disorder (also called dysthymia) is a depressed mood that lasts for at least two years.People with this condition may also have bouts of major depression at times. If you won't make an effort to be cured, it will become worse day by day.
3. Sadness is explainable but depression is an unexplainable pain:
Sadness is always subjective. To make it clear, maybe you're feeling sad for something. Now you ask yourself 'why?' and if you can figure out the specific reason then most likely it's sadness only.
But, depression is an unusual pain. If you will ask a depressed person the reason behind their sadness, then you may not find them answering it comfortably. Because, the fact is depression is not the result of only one bad occurrence. It's the mixture of those bad feelings you had been hiding in yourself for a while.
4. Sadness is a part of life but depression is a burden:
Life is not a bed of roses. So, you can never expect to be happy at a row. There will be times when you will have to cry and then they will go away again automatically. By considering these, it's okay to consider sadness a part of our life.
But, what if some thing bad happened with you and the bad feeling gets attached with your life for a longer time that you can't just abandon the feeling. Well, that is what depression is. It's like a burden that no one wants to get. You may feel sad several times a day. According to Webmd , Depression usually strikes more than once in a lifetime. For many people, it can become a chronic or lifelong illness, with several relapses or recurrences. On average, most people with depression will have four to five episodes during their lifetimes
5. Sad people may cry but a depressed person may not look sad 24/7 :
When people are extremely sad, it's normal that they're going to cry. Even some people also say that crying helps to relief the pain.
However, depressed people may not look sad 24/7. But, trust me deep inside it kills them. Even you will be wondered to know that the term of so called fake smile is also one kind of depression and it's considered as smiling depression
6. Sadness will go away automatically but depression won't:
Since sadness is not an illness, so it's only a matter of time that when you're going to get out of the sad feeling.
However, depression is a serious situation of a mental health. Some may try to handle it at home but again it requires loads of mental support and treating it wrongly may make it worse. So, unless you are a specialist yourself or you have someone around you like this, you should always talk to the best experts and therapists for the best support.
7. Sadness affects your mood but depression affects your life:
It's possible that you're not always going to have the happy mindset. Having an anxiety for something or maybe having a down feeling for something completely ruins the mood and also the day sometimes. But, at the end it's only some few days or weeks.
On the other hand, if depression isn't treated well, then it may be your lifetime pain. Depression may affect your career, your relationship and the people around you and it already kills you inside. Overall it ruins somewhat every aspect of our life. Even being depressed for a long time also may grow suicidal thoughts in someone's mind what is really dangerous.
8. You may try to help a sad person but it's not easy to help a depressed one:
The point may feel a bit strange but it's too. When you want to help your sad friend, then you may help her in several ways since you already know about the reason of her feeling down. Even it's possible to give them some positive condolences at that moment that may feel reliable for them too.
However, when you will try to help a depressed friend, you will face a completely different situation. Firstly, the person may not be able to make all her problems clear to you at a time. At that moment, you may end up misunderstanding them already. Secondly, literally no simple condolence can make a depressed person reliable. Because, she is already likely to have a bunch of pain and she knows it too that you can never feel her completely.
Even depression also comes with hopelessness and low self esteem. Eventually, you may also find it challenging to motivate them with any positive word easily.
9. You will understand when you're sad but you won't understand when you're depressed:
Again a strange point but it's true. You may ask how it's possible to be unaware of your own feeling? Well, when you become sad, you know that you're sad. To make it clear, as we have mentioned already that sadness comes with a reason, so when you're a sad, you already know that you have a point for feeling like this.
On the other hand, depression comes with and unexplainable reason. So, you may end up asking yourself, 'why should I feel bad?' , 'is it only in my head' or 'what is wrong with my feeling' but still you may not get a specific answer for any of these.
10. This is easy to be sad but not easy to feel depressed:
I know it's a weird point. Like why anyone would ever want to be sad or depressed automatically? Well, some people do. Even it's been mostly common among the young generations. To illustrate, we people keep saying that teenagers are misunderstood by their parents often. But have you ever thought that those children can be a reason of their parent's anger.
Nowadays, you will find so many teenagers and young adults being driven by their emotions. Whenever they feel bad for something, the tell themselves that it's a terrible emotion even if it's only a real sadness. Even sometimes they become too over serious on it that they don't think twice before taking any life ruining decision.
Even I am not the one saying this. You will most likely find these types of news and stories almost regularly on internet. So, from next time when anyone tries to pretend that they have depression or something like this, remember this fact.
Overview of all the points in short:
1. Sadness is not an illness but depression is.
2. Sadness may go away within days but depression can stay longer.
3. Sadness is explainable but depression is an unexplainable pain.
4. Sadness is a part of life but depression is a burden.
5. Sad people may cry but a depressed person may not look sad 24/7.
6. Sadness will go away automatically but depression won't.
7. Sadness affects your mood but depression affects your life.
8. You may try to help a sad person but it's not easy to help a depressed one.
9. You will understand when you're sad but you won't understand when you're depressed.
10. It's easy to feel sad but not easy to feel depressed.
My final thoughts: All of the points I have talked about here are scientifically proven and have been also experienced by people in real life. When someone is depressed, the biggest thing they need is a strong community of people who will give them the mental support they need. Since, many people don't know about these differences, so they misunderstand others most often. It's important to know about these differences because you never know who is being depressed around and who needs your help. It can be one of your friends or maybe one of your family members. So, from this time, whenever you find someone saying you that they're depressed, remember the differences then and try to understand them and in that way you may make someone's life a lot better.
